Felbamate is an anti-epileptic medication, also called an anticonvulsant. Felbamate is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat seizures in adults with epilepsy. Felbamate is also used to treat children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy that also causes developmental and behavior problems. Felbamate is usually given after other seizure medications have been tried without successful treatment of symptoms. Felbamate may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Felbatol is offered as an option when patients are under serious risks of severe refractory epilepsy. Only an individual and a doctor can decide if this medication is right to oneself or child. Doctors only prescribe Felbatol if the risks from seizures exceed the side effects of the drug. In adults, Felbatol may assist in controlling partial seizures while in children the drug may help in controlling seizures linked with the Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
