Cinacalcet decreases levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium, and phosphorous in the body. Cinacalcet is used to treat hyperparathyroidism (overactive functioning of the parathyroid glands) in people who are on long-term dialysis for kidney disease. Cinacalcet is also used to lower calcium levels in people with cancer of the parathyroid gland. Cinacalcet may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Cinacalcet is a drug used for dialysis patients suffering from hyperparathyroidism due to CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease). When excess PTH (Parathyroid Hormone) is produced by parathyroid glands it causes this condition known as hyperparathyroidism. PTH controls concentrations of phosphorus and calcium in the blood and this drug is used to regulate these concentrations by lowering PTH production. Patients with parathyroid cancer can also use the drug to lower calcium levels. This drug is however not advised for patients with CKD who are not on dialysis.
