Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing and runny nose, or hives on the skin. Hydroxyzine is used as a sedative to treat anxiety and tension. It is also used together with other medications given for anesthesia. Hydroxyzine may also be used to control nausea and vomiting. Vistaril is an antihistamine that is prescribed for the relief of symptoms caused by anxiety and tension associated with psychoneurosis. The effectiveness for use as an antianxiety agent for more than four months has not been assessed by systematic clinical studies, and the physician should reassess periodically during use to check for efficacy of this product. It is available in 25 and 50 mg capsules as well as an oral suspension.
