Iron sucrose injection is a form of the mineral iron. Iron is important for many functions in the body, especially for the transport of oxygen in the blood. Iron sucrose injection is used to treat iron deficiencies and iron deficiency anemia in patients with kidney disease. Iron sucrose injection may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
Venofer is a medication often used to treat iron deficiency (anemia) in people who have long-term kidney disease. Those with kidney disease often lose iron during dialysis and thus have to receive extra iron from outside sources. Venofer is essentially just an injection of iron given to bolster patients' iron levels and promote health.
