Stavudine is an antiviral medication that prevents human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cells from multiplying in your body. Stavudine is used to treat HIV, which causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Stavudine is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. Stavudine may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Stavudine is used in combination with other medicines in the treatment of HIV. Stavudine blocks the growth of HIV so that the immune system can work better in fighting diseases and infections. Stavudine is used to prevent the spread of HIV in the body but it does not kill the virus or cure HIV. You can still spread the virus to other people even when under HIV medication, so always use protection.
