Mycophenolic acid lowers your body's immune system. The immune system helps your body fight infections. The immune system can also fight or "reject" a transplanted organ such as a liver or kidney. This is because the immune system treats the new organ as an invader. Mycophenolic acid is used to prevent your body from rejecting a kidney transplant. This medication is usually given with cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral) and a steroid medication. Mycophenolic acid may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Myfortic is given to patients to suppress their immune system's reaction to foreign bodies, such as foreign tissue and fluids that come with an organ transplant. Because your body's immune system may reject the transplant, taking medicines like Myfortic is essential. This medication is given with other medications, and will be accompanied by close observation by your physician.
