Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention. Hydrochlorothiazide treats fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or kidney disorders, or edema caused by taking steroids or estrogen. This medication is also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Hydrochlorothiazide may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Microzide is a diuretic, or water pill, used to treat high blood pressure. It greatly increases the amount of water flushed out of the body through the kidneys and consequently, the urine. Its primary mechanism of action is in the kidney, where it reduces sodium reabsorption. This leads to more water being flushed from the body, which leads to less water in the blood and thus lower blood pressure.
