Linezolid is an antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. Linezolid is used to treat different types of bacterial infections, such pneumonia, skin infections, and infections that are resistant to other antibiotics. Linezolid may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Linezolid is a member of a class of drugs known as oxazolidinones. The drug is used in the treatment of conditions such as skin infections, pneumonia, and infections that have proven to be resistant to other antibiotics. It works by inhibiting the first stage of protein synthesis in cells, specifically Gram-positive bacteria. These bacteria include MRSA, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, and streptococci. It also works as a weak MAOI inhibitor. Linezolid can be administered both orally and intravenously. Patients are recommended to avoid foods rich in tyramine; this interaction can cause clinically significant challenges.
