Toxoplasmosis Symptoms

For most of the people with improved immunity system, they may never notice any symptom in their body since their immune system is strong and fights the parasite very well. Toxoplasmosis Causes

Toxoplasmosis is caused by certain parasites known as Toxoplasma gondii. The parasite can be transmitted to a person through many means. The parasite mostly affects people with low immunity systems. The parasite is found in cats and hence it can easily be spread if one handle the cat litter through irresponsible means. There are other ways in which one can get transmitted with this parasite. These include:

  • Taking uncooked or raw meat like beef, pork or lamb
  • Eating contaminated soil especially to pregnant women
  • Through blood transfusion or transplant of solid organs of the body that are not thoroughly screened.

Toxoplasmosis Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Toxoplasmosis is done through several tests. The most used test is serologic testing. It involves testing and measuring the level of immunoglobulin G in the body. The test determines the whether you have the parasites or not. To some extent estimation of the time of infection is required especially for the pregnant women. The test is also carried out along other tests such as avidity test.

Diagnosis is also carried out by directly observing the parasite in a stained tissue sections. This test is difficult due to challenges of obtaining the specimen and hence it is not used frequently.

Toxoplasmosis Treatment

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease and hence it is treated using the antimalarial drugs or antibiotics. However, the treatment of this medical condition depends on the health of the patient. Most of the people who are healthy don't require any treatment since the immune system is able to fight the infections. Drugs such as pyrimethamine, sulfadiazine, and folinic acid are used in the treatment. Pregnant individuals and infants can also be treated for toxoplasmosis, but the parasites are not eliminated completely since it becomes hard for the drug to reach their location. However, the remnants of the parasites are less active and don't cause infections.
