Hemorrhoids are painful swollen veins in the lower portion of the anal canal. They are usually not very serious. Internal hemorrhoids are veins swelling inside the anal canal while external hemorrhoids are when the swellings occur near the opening of the anus. One can have both at the same time.

Hemorrhoids Symptoms

There are various symptoms of hemorrhoids. Though they can go away with time when tolerated, it is important to see a doctor immediately you experience the following:

  • Pain during bowel movements.
  • Painless bleeding. This is the most common symptom of hemorrhoids. You might note tiny dots of blood on the tissue paper, on the stool or blood in the toilet bowl when you go to the bathroom.
  • Swelling which is in the form of tiny bulges around the anus. The swelling can also be inside the anus.
  • You may experience an itching sensation which is irritating in or around the anus.

Hemorrhoids Causes

Veins in the region of the anus elongate under pressure and swell. Swollen veins called may develop from a raise in pressure in the lower rectum.

The following are the causes of hemorrhoids

  • Straining while lifting heavy objects.
  • Spending a lot of time in the toilet.
  • Age may also be a factor since hemorrhoids are common among aged people.
  • Being overweight is also another cause.
  • Hemorrhoids are also common among pregnant women.
  • They can also be genetic since there are various cases of people getting them if their parents had them too.
  • Lack of proper dieting which includes foods with high-fiber and cutting in the intake of processed food.
  • Sitting in the same place for a long period of time.

Hemorrhoids Diagnosis

Doctors may observe external hemorrhoids simply by looking. Tests and procedures to diagnose internal hemorrhoids may include:

  • Assessment of your anal canal and rectum for abnormalities. During a digital rectal test, your doctor put in a gloved, lubricated finger into your rectum to feel anything unusual, such as growths. The exam can give your doctor an indication of what extra examination might be needed.
  • Visual check up of the anal canal and rectum. The doctor may also examine the lower portion of your colon and rectum with an anoscope, proctoscope or sigmoidoscope. Because internal hemorrhoids are often too soft to be felt during a rectal examination. These aid the doctor to see into your anus and rectum.

Hemorrhoids Treatment

In most cases, hemorrhoids treatment is a step by step activity that one can win on their own, like lifestyle adjustments. This is not to say one to neglect medications or surgical procedures which are also important.

These are ways to treat hemorrhoids.

  • Taking foods rich in fiber,  lower intake of processed foods and taking a lot of water about eight glasses a day.
  • Sitz baths. Involves sitting in warm water after a bowel movement for 15minutes several times a day.
  • Injecting the internal hemorrhoids to form a scar that covers the hemorrhoids.
  • This is done on large internal hemorrhoids through a traditional surgery called, hemorrhoidectomy.
  • Securing a tiny rubber using a special tool around the external hemorrhoids.
  • Using a laser beam to close off the end of the external hemorrhoid.
