Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue that should be growing on the inside of the uterus is growing on the outside. This may cause intense pelvic pain and even infertility in women that develop this condition. Some women can have this condition with no symptoms and realize that they have endometriosis when they are infertile.

Endometriosis Causes

Doctors and researchers are not completely sure as to why endometriosis happens. The primary hypothesis is that endometriosis is a genetic condition, although this condition is difficult to trace through the generations, because many assume that they just have painful menstrual cramps. This is often the assumption, because seventy percent of the pelvic pain will occur during menstruation for a woman with endometriosis.

  • In order to prevent endometriosis it is suspected that taking hormonal birth control may decrease the patient's chances of developing endometriosis. If the woman also exercises, eats well, and avoids alcohol, then her chances of having endometriosis may shrink.

Endometriosis Diagnosis

In order for a doctor or other health care professional to diagnose endometriosis he or she must perform a laparoscopy. This is a medical procedure that involves putting a camera into the abdominal cavity. By doing a laparoscopy the doctor can look at the outside of the uterus to see if there are any cysts or extra endometrial tissues growing. This can reveal itself in the form of scarring or inflammation.

  • For the doctor to do a laparoscopy there must be probable cause for endometriosis. Usually this cause is dictated by the patient who may come to a clinic complaining of pelvic pain. If you are experiencing pelvic pain, then you are urged to consult your doctor.
