Flurazepam is a benzodiazepine (ben-zoe-dye-AZE-eh-peen) similar to Valium. Flurazepam affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause sleep problems (insomnia). Flurazepam is used to treat insomnia symptoms, such as trouble falling or staying asleep. Flurazepam may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Flurazepam is a drug used in the treatment of mild to moderate insomnia. It belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines, meaning it acts on the GABA A receptor. This alters the brain chemistry to such an extent that aids the onset of sleep. However, long-term use of the drug is associated with tolerance, dependence and rebound insomnia.
