Theophylline is used to treat symptoms such as wheezing or shortness of breath caused by asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, and other breathing problems Theophylline may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Elixophyllin is a bronchodilator. This drug functions by progressively soothing muscles in the chest and lungs. That makes the lungs to be less responsive to allergens and other triggers of bronchospasm. Elixophyllin (theophylline) is not meant for an asthma attack. For an asthma attack, mild or severe, one must use a fast acting inhaler.
