Combivir is an oral antiviral combining zidovudine (Retrovir) and lamivudine (Epivir). It is administered for the purpose of treating Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections. The drug belongs to a group of HIV medicines commonly referred to as reverse transcriptase inhibitors that also include didanosine, emtricitabine and zalcitabine. Combivir helps a patient by preventing the HIV virus from multiplying in the body. This drug is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.
